Choose where the bot works
Which Discord permissions each bot needs, and how to include or leave out channels, categories, threads, and forums.
How it works
Each bot has its own role in your server, named after the bot. It checks messages only where that role can see them, and acts only where that role is allowed to. You control both with ordinary Discord permissions, so nothing changes until you change it. The bot never needs Administrator.
What each permission is for
- View Channels: lets it read and check new messages in a channel. Without it, the channel isn't checked.
- Send Messages and Embed Links: lets it post reports in your report channel, and warnings, calm notes, or support replies where you've turned them on.
- Send Messages in Threads: lets it post those same replies inside threads and forum posts.
- Read Message History: lets it see the messages around a report.
- Manage Messages: lets it delete a flagged message, if you allow deletions.
- Timeout Members: lets it time someone out, if you allow time-outs.
- Manage Threads: lets it read private threads. It never archives, locks, or deletes threads.
- Manage Roles (optional): lets Cover every channel add the bot to channels for you. It only ever gives itself permissions it already has for the whole server, and never changes anyone else's.
Check the whole server
- Open Server Settings, then Roles, and select the bot's role.
- Turn on the permissions above for the features you use.
- Channels that don't change permissions for that role now follow these settings.
- Or run /setup and choose Cover every channel. If the bot's role has Manage Roles, it adds itself to every channel and category it can reach, then tells you which ones it couldn't, such as private channels hidden from it, and how to add it there.
Leave out a channel or category
- Right-click the channel or category and choose Edit Channel or Edit Category, then Permissions.
- Add the bot's role and turn off View Channel.
- For a category, choose Sync Now on its channels so they follow it.
Include a private channel
- Private channels hide from every role you haven't added, including the bot's.
- Open Edit Channel, then Permissions, add the bot's role, and turn on View Channel, plus Send Messages if it should reply there.
Threads and forums
- Public threads and forum posts follow the permissions of the channel they're in. The bot joins each one it can see on its own, so they're checked like the channel.
- Private threads are hidden from everyone who isn't added, including bots. Allow Manage Threads on the parent channel (or the whole server) so the bot can join them, or add it to a single thread by mentioning it there.
- For replies inside threads, also allow Send Messages in Threads.
- Text chat in voice and stage channels is checked too, wherever the bot can see the channel.
Your report channel
Reports can include the message that was flagged, so they belong in a channel only your moderators can see. Run /setup and pick a channel where @everyone can't view messages, and where the bot can view, send messages, and embed links. The bot checks this before it posts anything.
Role order for time-outs
Discord only lets a bot time out members whose highest role is below the bot's role. In Server Settings, then Roles, drag the bot's role above the roles of the members it should be able to time out. Keep it below your admin and moderator roles.
See what it can reach
- In Discord, run /setup and choose Which channels are checked?
- In your dashboard, open the server: it shows whether the bot could post its welcome and whether your report channel works.
- Each time permissions change, the bot rechecks and tells your report channel what it can now see, delete in, and time out from.
